Local Music from Olympia to Seattle to Bellingham

So, I have two bands and we put our music up on Bandcamp so people can check it out and buy it. We do ok, but I think it'd be cool to hear about where other people put there stuff and how it's been working out. Of course iTunes is an obvious choice, but I like the business model better at Bandcamp. Not gonna go into all the ins and outs of Bandcamp unless it seems people wanna chime in on this subject. Any bands or musicians game? Plus we could share any marketing ideas that have worked or failed miserably. Could be educational.

Mike Starr's dead

Stay off the smack kids, that's all I have to say. R.I.P. Mike. No matter what, you were a fantastic bass player.

I never knew about this film. I got into the Gits because of Kurt Cobain believe it or not. I was hanging out at the bus stop by the Daily Olympian newspaper and the old Olympia community center, which was by Kurt's place at the time I think. Or maybe he'd moved by then, I don't remember. But I saw him on the street and he filled me in on them. I fell in love with their shows. Back then everybody still went to live shows. Not uncommon to just walk into a place and hope a good band was playing. So I checked out the Gits and started going to all their shows. I Met Mia Zapata maybe 4 or 5 times at shows. Really cool, friendly, down to earth chick. Still makes me sad to think of how she was killed. Anyway I went to the fundraiser concert the Gits did with Joan Jett and I can spot myself in the crowd. This was at the RCKNDY and I was in my usual spot in that venue. Right up front center stage where a hole in the stage gave me a hand hold and people couldn't push me from up front. I was right in front of Joan Jett's mic. I can still remember her perfume.

 In case all you people don't read The News-Tribune, they're running a great contest.

They're giving away tickets to all kinds of events - music (Pine Leaf Boys, Eddie Daniels, Billy Collins), theater (Little Mermaid, A Night With Groucho), a combo of the two (Pink Floyd Experience), comedy (The Nobodies of Comedy) and many others.

Like I said, I know they're running it in the paper, but they're also doing the promotion online.

I've discovered what I think is a really great new prog band! My own personal band Civita had a gig with them last night at The Central in Seattle. We were all blown away. They're a three piece called Half Zaftig. Check out some of their music at http://www.myspace.com/halfzaftig and I don't think you'll be disappointed. My favorite part of the night was when they launched into the "Darth Vader's Theme" music out of nowhere. Brilliant! I hate doing the whole "they sound like this band mixed with this other band with a dash of that band" thing, I like to let the music speak for itself. But here's a cut n paste of their own description:

Half Zaftig sounds exactly like Led Zeppelin spilling a beer on Living Colour at a party that King's X threw for Trent Reznor and The Beatles at Frank Zappa's house. Yeah, just like that!

And here's a little "behind the scenes" video they've put together that displays their sense of humor while still showing that they're great musicians. All the music in the video is theirs. Check them out and tell me what you think of them!

Ok, I'd like to know how well we're doing on our cover songs. Well our cover SONG. Everyone in the band gets to pick one and since Dave Navarro from Jane's Addiction is one of my all time favorite guitar players, I chose Mountain Song. I'd like you guys to let me know if we do a reasonable job of covering this song. so here's the original band Jane's Addiction doing Mountain Song...



It was actually Porno For Pyros, but since Dave Navarro was doing guitar, the only real difference from Jane's Addiction is a different bass player. Anyway, here's Civita doing Mountain Song...

Hey everybody! Paul from the band Civita here. Come check us out as we play a show on my BIRTHDAY! We're going to be playing with Johnny Stranger and The Mercury Rising. Does anyone know of or belong to a band that would like to play Tacoma's Gay Pride festival, Out In The Park? It is our 10 year anniversary and a MAJOR band just dropped out/broke up. *le sigh*

It's happening July 14th, Saturday after next, at Wright Park in Tacoma, and I am anxiously looking for:
-A band that can limit their foul mouths, I mean kids are in attendance.
-Queercore would be great but I have no idea if there are any in Tacoma or the surrounding communities. Seattle bands are SOOOO invited!
-A band that promotes equality, truth, and doesn't suck.
-OMG, hip hop would be awesome, especially some positive Blue Scholars like action.

Towards 4PM and on we get a lot of the 16+ age group and we'd like them to have something to rock out to.

Let me know if you are or know of anyone so we can take a listen and get them onstage. We unfortunately do not pay, as we are a total volunteer based non-profit grass roots kinda group, but will add them to our online updates and all Marketing materials made from here on out. Since the concert is early in the day it would be grand promotion for a later performance and we offer a Merchandising table for free to sell your wares.
